Jin Shin Jyutsu®

"We are here to simplify."
Mary Burmeister

JIN: person of knowing and compassion
SHIN: creator
JYUTSU: art

The art of the creator, through the person of knowing and compassion.

Jin Shin Jyutsu works with the universal energy that moves through all of us, the same energy that animates everything living. My hands rest in particular places, in particular sequences, and the energy begins to harmonise itself.

What the name holds

This work reminds the body how to return to its own rhythm, and how to renew itself once it is there. As the energy flow is restored, the whole system is nourished. Rest deepens, repair comes more easily, vitality returns.

It is never only physical. As the body settles, the mind follows. Thoughts become clearer, the constant background hum begins to fade, and emotions that felt tangled have room to gently unknot.

Where energy has become stagnant, it does need help to move, and that is what my hands are for. My help is an invitation rather than a correction. Whatever is being held has been held for good reason. Met with the right touch and given long enough, it finds its way back to its own rhythm and flow.

Awakening what is already there

Jin Shin Jyutsu has been used and studied in hospitals and healthcare settings, including cancer care, cardiac recovery, surgery, labour and birth, stress and convalescence.

At Morristown Medical Center in New Jersey, it has been offered across acute-care units, including intensive care and pre- and post-operative care, supporting patients with pain, anxiety, nausea and recovery alongside conventional treatment.

Research and clinical programmes have reported meaningful reductions in pain, anxiety, nausea and stress, helping explain why Jin Shin Jyutsu has continued to be used within integrative hospital care.

If you would like to explore the research further, Jin Shin Jyutsu Spirit, Mind & Body gathers studies and research in one place.

The research

Everyone: newborns, children, adults and older people. Animals too. Through pregnancy, illness and recovery.

It is gentle and non-invasive and can be offered alongside conventional medical treatment, including at a hospital bedside. I also offer hospital visits by arrangement.

Who it’s for

An hour of deep restoration. Fully clothed, lying face-up on something soft and warm.

I begin by settling and listening: to you, and to what your body is asking for that day. From there I choose the flows: sequences of gentle hand placements on particular points along the energy pathways, held quietly, one after the next. No pressure, no manipulation, no oils. Many people drift into a deep half-sleep, which is entirely welcome.

The experience is different for everyone, but most often it is warmth, a deep unwinding, and the quiet moment where something lets go. People frequently leave lighter and more positive than they arrived, and notice things continuing to unfold over the days that follow.

Wear something comfortable. If you eat beforehand, keep it light. In-person sessions take place in North West London.

Home and hospital visits can also be arranged.

Jin Shin Jyutsu can also be offered remotely, so we do not need to be in the same room. Many people find remote sessions deeply restorative and experience them as fully as an in-person session. This is also how I offer Jin Shin Jyutsu within my online integrated packages.

What a session is like

Jin Shin Jyutsu self-help: simple practices for everyday life

Much of Jin Shin Jyutsu can be practised with nothing but your own hands. Some holds are remarkably simple, yet profound.

As an Authorised Jin Shin Jyutsu® Practitioner and Self-Help Teacher, I can teach you this beautiful art so you can use it for yourself every day, wherever you are: on the bus or Tube, on the way to work, lying awake in bed at night, or even quietly during a stressful meeting. It becomes something you can return to in the moment, when you need it.

You can also book a one-to-one online self-help session. I’ll choose practices for your individual needs, and we’ll practise them together with my guidance, so you can use them confidently for yourself at home and in everyday life.

Jin Shin Jyutsu self-help can also sit naturally alongside Breath-Body-Mind, giving you another simple, portable way of supporting yourself in real time.

People come to Jin Shin Jyutsu with many of the same physical, emotional and mental concerns they may bring to homeopathy. The difference is not necessarily what you are experiencing, but the way we work with it. The two approaches complement each other beautifully.

See the full list of concerns I support with Homeopathy and Jin Shin Jyutsu, here.

What people come with

Jin Shin Jyutsu is a complementary practice and can be used alongside conventional medical care. Please do not stop or change any prescribed medication without first speaking to the doctor who prescribed it.

Alongside your medical care

The roots are very old and share ground with the older healing traditions of Asia. For a long time they were largely lost.

They were brought back to light by Master Jiro Murai. At twenty-six, after becoming gravely ill, he withdrew to a cabin in the mountains. For seven days he fasted in silence, holding the ancient finger positions he had learned as a child. According to the traditional account, on the seventh day a great heat moved through him, the fever broke and he experienced a profound healing. He understood that the ancient finger positions he had been holding had played a central part in his recovery. He spent the remaining fifty years studying and developing what became Jin Shin Jyutsu.

First he called it the art of happiness, for the joy it brought people. Later, the art of longevity, and then the art of kindness. In the end he settled on Jin Shin Jyutsu: the art of the creator, through the person of knowing and compassion, because that held all three.

He passed his knowledge to Mary Burmeister, who carried it to the United States in the 1950s. From there it spread quietly around the world, largely by word of mouth.

Where it comes from

Jin Shin Jyutsu can be used on its own, or woven together with Homeopathy and Breath-Body-Mind as part of my integrated packages.
